Yes it shows code ---- but when I press the number one button to select the first part of the code it won't select anything but underneath the code --- there is a number 3 and I'm not sure what that means

Hi all I'm new to this need some advice badly I have a ford radio 6000 m series I have just got the code for the stereo but when I go to press the number one button to select the first number it does not let me and where it's flashing code underneath there is a number 3 can anyone help ???
